All about Forbush ARTiques

Forbush ARTiques is one of the most creative stores in southern Iowa!

Marlin and Joanne (Jo) O'Conner, owners, built the store in May of 2010, which includes her studio and a workshop. Jo named her store Forbush ARTiques because she and her husband have an interest in Centerville, Iowa history. Forbush was a town near their store location. In the early 1900's, the White Breast Coal Mine was at its peak of operation. Forbush had a hotel, store, post office and over sixty homes. The Forbush School, where her husband attended, closed in 1965. Now, all of the buildings are gone. The O'Conner's have their own private collection of Centerville and surrounding town's historical items on display. The décor of the store is from the 1940's, with many items coming from former businesses in Centerville. Marlin and Jo purchased and restored doors, trim, flooring and the beautiful oak staircase from homes that were demolished. Because Jo sells art and antiques, she thought Forbush ARTiques would be a good name for her store!

Jo has been a professional artist for over twenty years. She works in pastel, colored pencil, pen and ink, but her specialty is clay tile-making. Customers give her photographs and she makes personalized, carved clay tiles and planters. She makes tiles of homes, schools, restaurants, churches, banks, businesses, police badges, vehicles, farm scenes and children's silhouettes. She also makes glazed trivets for hot foods and installation. She has created a series of quilt, historic and religious designs. She also makes 3D clay planters of homes and businesses. Jo is a member of the Handmade Tile Association of America. Her artwork can be found in 32 states and Japan.

At Forbush ARTiques, Jo sells her unique artwork, as well as over twenty other artists' handcrafted works. You can find beautiful jewelry, stained glass creations, loomed rugs, baby items, watercolor paintings, baskets, notecards, pillows, purses and much more. Amid the art and on the second floor of the store, there are hundreds of authentic antiques for sale. Jo also provides an affordable custom framing service. There are many colors and styles of mats and frames to suit any décor.

Forbush ARTiques is open the first Tuesday in April through the last Saturday in December. It is open Tuesdays through Saturdays from 9-5, or by appointment. From Highway 5 North of Centerville, turn west at the Dale Church onto 490th Street. The second building is Forbush ARTiques.
